Senior Underwriter Hybrid (Detroit or Grand Rapids, MI)

Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit financial institution committed to equity and community investment, is looking for a Senior Underwriter to join their lending team. This hybrid role can be based out of either Detroit or Grand Rapids, MI and offers a strong work-life balance, flexible hybrid schedule, and a collaborative culture centered on economic justice and inclusive lending.

Requirements of the Senior Underwriter:

  • Bachelor s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in banking, real estate finance, or nonprofit lending.
  • Experience in credit analysis and loan structuring; construction loan knowledge is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and client-facing skills; excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations, affordable housing, or community development finance is highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Excel, CRM systems, and financial modeling tools.
  • Passion for equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities of the Senior Underwriter:

  • Serve as the main point of contact for clients through the loan application, underwriting, and closing process.
  • Analyze and structure community-focused loan requests, primarily for nonprofit facility projects.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to complete due diligence and documentation.
  • Prepare and present thorough credit memos for internal loan committee approval.
  • Support EDI principles and promote inclusive lending practices within underserved communities.
  • Maintain CRM records and meet lending production goals in coordination with the regional team.
